Humpback Whales Travel from Cape Cod to Dominican Republic

Between Cape Ann and Cape Cod, in the southwest corner of the Gulf of Maine, is Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary- summer feeding grounds for humpback whales. The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies is located on the northern tip of Cape Cod. The Center is a leading research organization, which for 35 years has been increasing our knowledge of North Atlantic whales. The Center also coordinates the Disentanglement Network, and has freed more than 90 whales since 1984. Atlantic White Shark Conservancy encourages you to learn more about the Center by visiting their website: http://www.coastalstudies.org/

Many humpback whales that feed in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary during the summer spend the winter in Silver Bank, part of The Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic. This past winter, my husband and I had the incredible experience of swimming with humpback whales in the Silver Bank with Conscious Breath Adventures (http://consciousbreathadventures.com/). Fortunately, the Dominican Republic has set up strict regulations to protect the whales, limiting the up-close encounters with humpbacks.
